In addition to being featured on the Nikonnet website and TakeGreatPictures.com, his work appears in Nikon's 2005/2006 Full Line Product Guide and he was interviewed by Herb Keppler for the Sept. 2005 issue of Popular Photography and Imaging magazine. Jim has received many awards since he started exhibiting his work in 1996 from Huntington to Montauk. He has shown his work at b.j. spokes gallery, the "Winners' Circle" show at Gallery North, Hecksher Museum of Art with the Art League of LI, the HAC’s Petite Art Gallery, the Long Island History Museum, WLIW's "Ticket" program on Channel 21, and  the LaMantia Gallery.

“For me, the process of getting to that perfect image is like the artist who paints several canvases. I keep experimenting with shot after shot until my instincts tell me I’ve hit it just right. The in-between canvasses are just as important as the final effort. Every shot is a part of the creative process.”

James Twomey III is an award-winning fine-art photographer whose subjects capture the poetic nature of rural New England as well as abstract insights into everyday objects. While he has photographed a wide range of subjects, his portfolio concentrates mostly on serene landscapes, stunning autumn scenes, and unusual views of the everyday world, captured using traditional film photography. Subject locations include Long Island, New York City, the Adirondacks, Letchworth State Park, Cape Cod, Pennsylvania, Vermont and Maine.

Of special note are the titles of his works which are an integral part of each piece. As an example, the bold and emotional statement made with his image of the American flag behind a shop window is made all the more intriguing by the title "Outside Looking In." Or the abandoned bathtub outside a ramshackle roadside storage building bearing the amusing title of “Executive Bath.”

Storytelling and emotional content are often key elements in his work. For instance, the piece titled "Jordon’s Thought" is a favorite among his fans. The lone chair beneath a sheltering tree, bathed in morning mist suggests a connection to an experience. As viewers imagine themselves sitting in the chair, they sometimes project interior feelings such as independence, sweet solitude, or serenity onto the meaning of the piece.

James continues to work with film and the traditional development and printing processes. Very much the purist, he resists alteration or enhancements of his photographs and all of his pieces are unadulterated original C prints, with the exception of some cropping. On rare occasions a polarizing filter or graduated neutral density filter is used.

James Twomey’s work can be seen on Long Island during the year at a variety of outdoor and indoor shows. For a list of shows, check out the calendar of events on his site. Appointments are available at The Twomey Gallery, an in-home gallery in Huntington he shares with his wife, Victoria, a poet and digital artist.
